My genesis without rack and guards is not much heavier than the carbon, at around 9kg. Only my single speed is lighter but it's pretty stripped back for obvious reasons 
The steel build was probably around £1500 if you take away the fripperies like a pretty costly saddle, bought because it was the right colour. I got a frame, sourced all the parts and a friend put it all together. Has the groupset, wheels, width bar, tape and stem I wanted which the stock bike didn't have
