Need a new MTB helmet for son - any recommendations?

Our son needs an adult size medium MTB helmet in a colour he likes and will wear so ideally black. I want a high Virginia Tech safety rating of at least 4 prefereably 5. I would also like it to be a reasonable price as it is highly possible we will need to replace due to damage not age of the helmet. He has had three accidents resulting in minor, walking away injuries since he got back into cycling this summer (once on his mums medium sized MTB and twice on his secondhand full susser giant stance bought this summer after he had been riding for a month or so on local trails.

He is only 13 yo but he will be needed a helmet in size medium adults or if there is a good youth helmet the same size perhaps but I think he is onto adult kit in clothes and helmets now. He is a fearless but sensible (for a 13yo boy) cyclist who rides on local trails with jumps and at trail centres when we or his friend's parents take him. He used to be into cycling with us but got out of it / lost interest then he grew out of his frog bike. Used to cycle tour up to 50 miles a day from 4.5 or possibly 3.5 yo for two week family cycle touring holidays. He was early in learning to ride a bike compared to his peer group and when the school taught them to ride he was already doing stunts like standing on his saddle or top tube when every other kid could not even ride a bike without stabilisers. He is fearless but sensible on trails when we ride with hime. Very fast going downhill on the trails in the trail centres we take him to. I only do up to blue but he does red whwn on his own or with others who also ride MTBs. So he is quite good on a bike but that also means I need a high rated helmet.

I cannot find my first choice of Specialised Camber MIPS in black medium except when over MRRP. I could get the tactic 4 which is about £80 but available in his size and acceptable colours to him. I wonder what else is out there with a high rating from Virginia Tech but not too expensive. Any recommendations??

Go to a shop, get one that fits, plus that he likes.

Proper shop. If you believe helmets save lives or reduce injury then dont negate that by buying something online that may not fit optimally.

Find a proper shop with a good range and try them on him.

Then ensure the strap is adjusted correctly, which 4 out of 5 riders fail to do and which kind of defeats the point of going to all that effort in the first place.

Happy shopping!

Based on your needs, the Tactic 4 is a solid choice. It has a great 5-star Virginia Tech rating and fits your budget.

Another excellent option to look for is the Bell Servo. It also has a top safety rating and often comes in around the same price.

If you can stretch the budget a little, the POC Tectal Race is a fantastic helmet with a great reputation for protection on trail rides.

Stick with the Tactic 4 if it's available, but check for the Bell Servo as a direct alternative. Both are proven and should keep him safe.
