And it is now later, so have that beer.
In all seriousness, it sounds to me like you did all the right things, and the driver may not have seen you until you signaled. Good thing you did that, and were alert to your surroundings. Sounds like everyone had a round of good fortune this day.

I am glad no one was injured.
The first time you are involved in any road traffic accident (rta) its a shock.
Stay calm dont accuse anyone else and never apologise or admit anything (even if you think it might be your fault). If possible get contact details of any witnesses and the other party. By the sounds of it you should be OK, however....in future.
You should always look before you signal, after you signal look again (its called the lifesaver) then menouver if safe to do so.
When there has been an rta the vechicle following is usually at fault for any collision because its up to them to keep a propper stopping distance even if the vehicle in front does something stupid. (Check out insurance scams involving criminals suddenly stopping or even reversing to hit the vehicle behind)
Finally I strongly recommend joining the Cycle Touring Club. It costs about £40 annually, members receive automatic 3rd party insurance and access to cycle friendly solicitors should the worst happen. They also send you a very nice magazine every other month.

Good luck and please don't stop riding.
