Well still looking and been looking at new Bikes too
Seen the Boardman - advantages - good bikes, and specs, and takes mudguards. Disadvantages - no gears for tougher climbs
Seen some Giant Defy's. Got good gears, can only take a peculiar own brand mudguard as no clearance under the brakes. Quite like them
You can use Crud Mk2's on a Defy. I had them on my Avail, but better with 23mm tyres than 25mm ones. The Giant guards are better and no more costly ultimately...a bit of a pig to fit though (as are all mudguards it seems unless very clever!)
I get on well with my Defy 2 2011 which is my daily commuting bike. It is happier with 23mm tyres under the own brand guards which I have had no trouble installing, removing for the "summer" & reinstalling for the autumn. It is not an out & out racer and I find it pretty comfortable. Did a 100k ride on it about 18 months ago, and 2 60-milers last summer and it did very well.
SKS Raceblade longs will fit the Z95. If I could shoe horn them onto a short wheelbase early 90's Ribble 653 road bike, they will fit a Z95 and give you almost full coverage.
