And without mudguards your bike becomes filthy in no time.

You may also need warmer gloves/socks, a buff to keep your face warm, a skullcap for under your helmet (if you wear one)
I love commuting in winter, once the initial shock of stepping outside into the freezing cold has gone
But get two of each if you can. My gloves can take longer than overnight to dry properly, and if you have a second buff you can put the dry one on for the journey home, or can wear one on your head and another around your neck in the depth of winter.

Is the B'Twin stuff decent from Decathlon?

Might pop in there this weekend, although because of shopping online, I've lost confidence deciding what to buy in an actual shop! How would I know what jacket to buy for example, other than 'looks good'?

I don't think I've had a duff item from Decathlon yet!
Have a browse round all the other sections as well though. I've picked up some really good wicking tops etc in the mountaineering and running aisles

How does that work, surely you would have to tie the end of the legs first.
Women's hosiery or stockings not cycling tights. Make a sausage shape and pop it in shoe. The litter pulls the moisture out. I use it in my drysuit when I have sweated far too much.

I've just ordered this one following the decent review on road.cc. Obviously won't be breathable at the price but looks excellent value for money. Should get it today or tomorrow hopefully.

Comfy armchair to one person & a plank to the next
Just standard that came with bike.
Which are usually cheap crap because who refuses to buy a bike because the pedals are junk?

I like the Vavert Commuter/Leisure pedals with big rubber grips. About £15. I've slipped once on them and that was partly because I was trying to start in high gear after an unexpected stop (bah derailleurs)... even then, the foot didn't slide off.

Hi @CC2014 Just to let you know that down in the soft south we are having our 3rd summer of 2014! I was in shorts and T shirt this morning. London is very lucky with weather most of the time.
I watched the weather forecast for scotland, they said some places in the West Highlands got 100mm of rain yesterday! That's 4 inches! I'm not sure any expensive clothing or equipment will cope with that type of onslaught.

If you buy some waterproof over-trousers, you don't have to waste money on mudguards. They keep the bottom half of your body dry too, not just the spashes on your bum etc.
Won't keep your feet dry, though. Mudguards and overshoes (or waterproof shoes) should keep your feet a bit warmer and drier. In winter it's important to keep your extremities as warm and dry as possible - that's where it hurts most.

Going into my LBS tomorrow to get mudguards on. They are a must!

Bit worried as he only has Crud Catcher MK 2s and then hybrid ones - not sure these will fit my bike.
