cripes - I abandoned windows after my Win 8 refused to update to 10 as it was supposed to.

Fraud.

Now on a chromebook which is way cheaper, runs way better.

Though I am aware that I've sold my soul to the dodgy google.

I know the feeling. Current IT contract is for windows XP.

My old employer uses XP still on the whole which surprises a lot of people.

I've just updated my clients desktop estate where everything was XP. It's not unusual.
Interestingly, when I worked on the submarine command systems they were bespoke operating systems with a unix front end, so I wouldnt necessarily believe the important things are running Windows of any flavour

At a much lower technological level tbf, but some of our machinery suppliers labelling communications systems still work on, and favour XP because it's such a stable platform apparently.

They aren't networked to the outside world so could happily run XP indefinitely.
Yes, i did wonder about this important point.

To be fair, as stated above, it's pretty unlikely that the on-board systems talk to the wider internet!

Pretty lucky really, otherwise chances are some poor unsuspecting Cadet would have been duped into clicking the 'upgrade me to Windows 10' button- it's hard enough to find Control Panel on that, let alone the option to fire a nuclear missile...

@growingvegetables , maybe, as the bearer of this terrible news, you could tell us why the submarines need to be running a newer operating system? It's a bit of an oversimplification, but as far as I can work out, you could do most of the important stuff with a command line ;)

Is it not the case that mission critical stuff where failures can prove deadly always used technology a few generations older as it has been tried and tested?
