The series in general is fantastic. Don't bother with the books (which I don't often say).
For further Nelsan excellence, check out "Get on Up". And to go off on a vague tangent from there, watch "Beat the Devil", which is the only time you're likely to see James Brown, Clive Owen, Gary Oldman and Marilyn Manson in a film together (albeit in a glorified BMW advert).
