Nerves !

When I am out on my bike I am fine - over the years I have developed a sense I can look a car and think 'he ain't stopping" - "Hes turning even though he isn't indicating" - My arms go up in despair when someone does something daft - but in general although I am a careful cyclist - I am not riding frightened.

However when I sit and thinking about it - that scares me - Mr parcel man in white van - doing 50 whilst sending text in a 30 limit - you know the drill ! -Other then my helmet theirs only lycra to keep my skin and bones intact !!!- its almost like pre ride nerves at times I think its madness - but once out - even if traffic dense west midlands Im mostly fine

Anyone else have such thoughts ?

Probably fairly normal TBH.

I've decided to stop road cycling due to the extent of injuries I received, not due to nerves. I don't want 6 weeks plus in hospital wondering if I'd walk again - one sudden movement during healing would have meant I'd have literally be on wheels my whole life. It was too bad an experience to want to repeat.

Riding MTB is more or less guaranteed you'll crash at some point, but that's what I do as it's usually lots slower, I've got some protection (pads) and involves no tonnes of metal coming at you. You can get nervous at the top of an obstacle, you either commit, or bail.

No I feel 100% secure on two wheels and luckily I ride on quiet country roads. My crash in 2018 was caused by my own recklessness.

I am bit like @fossyant, not as serious but non the less two weeks in hospital which left me pretty low and not to be repeated, I am a bit more nervous in traffic than before my accident so tend to avoid it if possible, more off road now.
I am a lot more intolerent of bad driving, it will get me into trouble some day.

I just ride defensively (mostly). Wet road surfaces probably worry me more overall than WVM esp at the moment.
I pretty much always ride in some level of traffic so I’d never ride if constantly stressing about other road users

I try to avoid riding on roads as much as possible, so I try to stick to cycle paths and bridleways. But when I do ride on the road, a tiny part of my mind is nagging that I am trusting myself to the actions of car, bus and truck drivers in their big machines. The main thing I can do is ride carefully, and let the other vehicle go first, even if I am supposedly in the right and they are supposedly in the wrong. I'd sooner not have to die thinking "actually this was my right of way" as I disappear under the wheels of a truck or whatever....

No i don't think about it, I was hit 4 years ago on a roundabout, I am always a bit careful on that particular one, however in 2001 I had a really bad Motorcycle accident, my fault, I managed 2 spinal fractures 2 pelvic fractures and I also fractured the socket that my femur fits in to my hip.... when I recovered I was invincible!! I bought a faster bike and rode it faster, we have no upper speed limit on the mountain:eek: It took me 12 months to calm down and get centered, it does work both ways!!

Carbon fibre... LMAO!!!
I’m mostly ok, but every so often it crosses my mind when hearing something approaching at speed behind me to wonder if they are paying attention or gawping at a phone. Nerves jangle a bit occasionally.

Me too.
Kinda why I used to enjoy cycling wearing headphones. I'd rather not know the driver behind me didn't see me till it was too late.
If it's gonna happen, I'd rather not know about it before it happens.
