I fell in with a roadie on my ride this morning who appeared to be on an old steel bike.

"I see you are riding steel," I remarked.

"Looks like it," he replied. "But it's carbon."

Further conversation revealed he was riding an early Specialized carbon bike made about 20 years ago.

It looked like steel because the tubes were narrow and butted at the joins.

The rider told me it was a bit heavy, but rode well and it was the one bike he will always keep.

Anyone else have one or know more about them?

I lusted after that Trek 8300 at the time; it was too expensive though. Eventually I test-rode one and found it horribly stiff.

A carbon bike on the road after 20 years? I thought they melted in the rain and exploded in direct sunlight!
No, no! They only explode when you look at them sideways. Fortunately, most people's eyeballs aren't sufficiently nimble to do the sideways look, and therefore carbon bikes tend not to explode.

I have noticed that some of the BSOs available in Toys-R-Us and the like are starting to appear with stickers along the lines of 'CarboFerric Technology'...

I've got that Giant bike. Well actually my brother has coz i tarted it up and gave it to him. Comfy ride, it was hard to give it away. I put yellow bar tape on it, brings out the colour of the frame. A mate gave it me. He said it was carbon but bcoz it was lugged i didn't believe him. Lol... Until now!

Ah, I see. Probably referring to the small amount of carbon that is mixed with iron to make steel. Alas some people will actually think it's something to do with carbon fibre.
