There I was, at Knockengorroch, sitting by an open fire trying to recall the last non alcoholic drink to have passed my lips when I was offered some food that I'd witness being prepared and cooked by an outrageously dressed chef on the fire and passed around the folk keeping warm by the fire.

I took a digestive biscuit sized piece, bit half of it off and chewed and savoured it. When asked about its flavour I pronounced that the garlic was a tad strong and a few herbs would not go amiss much to the delight of the chef. I thought that I'd been eating a form of black pudding.

I was almost right, the blood content was probably the same but I'd been eating midge burger made from the corpses of the Caledonian Luftwaffe extracted from a propane powered midge trap.

I quietly disposed of the other half and rinsed the remnants of the first bite down with several glugs of homemade chilli vodka.

I suppose it was a form of recycling.....

I used to feel part of the crowd and now it's part of me.

I'd have eaten it all, extra nutrition and all that. Anyway, 'Caledonian Luftwaffe', I'll need to remember that one, thanks!

I obviously don't get out enough.

So, it was quite nice, and you enjoyed it, until you knew what it was? I'd have thought you were more sensible than that. Shame to waste the other half.

I've swallowed enough of the little bastards over a lifetime of camping and climbing in Scotland not to want any more, thanks.

I normally eat midge tartare, harvested baleen whale style as I cycle along with my mouth open. Cooked would make a nice change. :wahhey:

Do they still cause you to feel itchy even when they are dead and minced into a burger?

Nope.

They were gazzillions of them on Friday night. Far too many to risk wearing a kilt without a full wetsuit as underwear. Avon Skin So Soft worked a treat. It was unnerving walking through thick clouds of them on the way to the stages from the car park and relying on a feminine post-shower moisturising spray as the defence against bites. Only three or four bites on the sparayed areas - head, neck and throat and a host of bites where the gits got me when I had to use a portaloo and exposed unsprayed flesh. Must remind myself to carry a bottle with me at all times at Knockengorroch.
