I'm in the office and so can't post a clip, but it was the Lemon Song bass riff by John Paul Jones of Led Zep that made realise that the bass could be a virtuoso instrument. It inspired me to take up the bass 25 years ago, and now after all these years, I still can't match the fluidity and tone that he achieves. All I lack is talent!

I collect my first bass this afternoon  I'm imagining by 10pm I'll have mastered it
Although I am off on holiday tomorrow and Mrs Marmion has issued instructions that it is not coming with us

But I still remember first encountering Imelda May's band - in this performance - with a big smile breaking out all over my face:

Had that effect on me too... I've always loved a bit of 'billy, and Imelda is gorgeous.
Have seen Al Gare (great stand up bassist) doing other stuff before Imelda went global... he did some stuff with Pete Williams (Dexys) and also plays in the Katmen (with Imelda's guitarist/hubby, and Slim Jim Phantom from the Stray Cats)

A kid says to his his Dad that he wants to learn how to play the bass. Dad thinks it's an interesting use of his time, and will keep him from hanging around on street corners, so buys him a bass and amp.
On Friday, the kid goes out at 6pm sharp for his first lesson. He comes home later.
"How did it go?" asks Dad.
"Great." the kid replies. "I learnt all the notes on the E string."
Next Friday, off the kid goes to his next lesson. On his return he proudly announces "I learnt all the notes on the A string."
The following Friday, Dad is surprised to see the kid with his feet up watching TV at 6.30.
"No lesson?" he asks.
"Nah," says the kid. "Got a gig tonight."
