We need to arm the bikes with crowbars, not to actually use but if someone comes up to your car window wielding a crowbar you listen to, and remember them

Alternatively, have an airzound wired up to a parking sensor, if they're within 3ft of your handlebars, they get a blast... Simple

I find that getting into a discussion with someone just tends to make me stressed, which kind of defeats the point of travelling by bike in the first place. The best approach I've found is to just give them your best "I'm not angry, I'm just...disappointed" look, combined with a shake of the head. It says everything you want to say, but isn't in any way inflammatory.

I'm in two minds about the whole 'cheery wave when they do the right thing' thing. I suspect that thanking drivers for doing what they should be doing sends the wrong message - like doffing our flat caps in gratitude for crumbs. We have every right to expect that drivers do the right thing by driving with due care and attention around us at all times. Why should we thank them for that?

Because it spreads good karma? Because it shows them we're human too?
