Not here offten enough to argue
I'm looking for advice on my next C2W bike - Budget is 1K - but there are some pre-requisits

Its has to be steel - don't mind whether its compact or triple - would like disc brakes, but not a deal breaker - must take full mudguards and a rack

What you got???

edit: i have to use evans cycles

Two q's for you- what sort of bike are you after? Sound like a road bike but that's a guess?

Are you allowed to buy discounted bikes or does it have to be full price?

Evans do the Kona Honky Tonk which is a stunning looking bike, it kinda has a tech-retro coolness about it.
They are available with Disk brakes and well worth a look IMHO.
Can't tell you too much more about the bike other than @ianrauk has one so should be able to tell you more.

I think at the moment its a toss up between 3 bikes - Genesis Equilibrium 00, Ridgeback Panorama, Dawes Galaxy - although the fuji does intrigue me, but it has bar end shifters

Not sure if I would bother with cheap steel TBH. Decent steel frames alone start around £1500, so you can imagine what you are going to get for 1k for the whole bike. Let me ask differently - why steel? What are you looking for that a good ALU frame won't give you?

I'm looking for something similar - although not tied to steel and can go a little over 1k, but options that might suit you (and not so far mentioned) are:
  • Jamis Bosanova
  • Charge Plug 3
  • Charge Hi Filter (same bike I believe but 2013 model)
  • Genesis CDF2014
  • Revolution country explorer
Ooops - scrub the last one evans don't sell it...

The equilibrium is Reynolds 853 tubing. It retails at £400 for the frameset. It will ride differently to a good ALU (from say Kinesis) but not better in any meaningful way, and be a lot heavier. Out of the ones you're looking at, it's probably the best choice, although I do like the no non-sense look of the Kona. I just think that something like a CAADx would do everything the equilibrium can, but better, and be really handy off-road as well.
