Well I am now the proud owner of a nice new bike. It all seems to work nicely and is quite comfortable in the few miles or so I have ridden it.

Thanks for all your advice, the chaps in Halfords looked quite impressed as I checked the headset, wheel release things and brakes. I was a little worried it might have problems, as the chap in front of me had a child's bike that had had to go back twice before with him.

It is going with me and MrsMeg to Cheshire this next week (to visit our daughter) and I'm told there's some good cycling to be had down there.

I'll let you know how I get on, I'm sure I'll have more questions for you all.

PS Thanks for the link Hairy Jock, looks just what I need.

Now you've got the bike you might find a few local cycle routes handy, try getting some of the Spoke cycle maps, available from most LBS.
i might get some of those myself next week hairy j.

glad you like your new bike mistermeg. cheshire is a great place to ride a bike, loads of back lanes with nice country pubs. looks like i'll be passing you on the 74 as we're in edinburgh next week.
