Hi guys
Got into cycling 4 years ago and have really got the bug...started commuting on an old mountain bike but quickly moved on to a trek 7.5 fx hybrid which I love. .done a few long ish rides and feel now its time to move on to a road bike. ..but which one. Would love to have a bike that would feel comfortable doing more longer distances but also have a sporty side. My budget is 800 pounds. What would you recommend. Thanks.

Go to your local friendly LBS and have a look at some of the options in your price band.

If you want a road bike with a more relaxed geometry, something like the Cannondale Synapse, Specialized Secteur or a Giant Defy should offer what you need (there are undoubtedly others too). For £800, I'd want Tiagra or SRAM Apex groupset (with Specialized, you'll get a good frame, lifetime warranty but lower level components). If you can find a 2012 model, you'll get more bang for buck vs the current 2013 range  The Halfords Boardman bikes win lots of accolades too, but the shops themeselves and the service can be a lottery

If you want to spend £800 on a new bike and can afford it, go for it. You w ill get more for your money buying used, but perhaps you just want something new and shiny having saved the pennies ;) Mr Biggs is a frugal soul I think... ;)

I have a Giant defy 3 its a fantastic bike. Its sporty and fast(as long as the legs hold out). But its geometry and gearing make it fine for long days in the saddle..See if your lbs will let you take one for a spin. Its worth a try
