I have been looking at a new bike currently have a Viking vueltra.

I have got it down to a scott speedster 60 compact and a specialized allez 2014 model

Which one is the better of the two

How long is a bit of string? - better at what?

Both bikes are built to a budget as such compromised in different ways, what do you want from the bike?

Go test ride them, see which is most enjoyable. Either bike will be more than adequate BUT check clearances for mudguards, the ability to take a rack. Specialized do a lifetime frame warranty and will replace if it gets damaged, which might be helpful for an everyday bike (Scott may offer the same, don't know)

Fair point @Cyclist. I think it would be good to test ride both, my favorite bike is the one which makes me smile the most. It is a pretty good benchmark IMHO.
I like many people get caught in the brand, warranty, specification, colour discussions when it is a lot more simple than that. Does it make you smile.

I will be going to try them both this week work permitting, and I don't need to worry about racks etc as don't plan on fitting them as don't need much with me at work

I have been and tried both out today and I'm very impressed with the specialized allez so I will be getting one of those when I can afford it as wasn't planning on spending £600 on £500
