As part of the Cycle2Work scheme I am getting my first road bike. I have plumped for the Boardman Comp 09 which should knock the socks off my Apollo FS26S MTB.

I can't wait, Emailled the accounts manager today and will be waiting with bated breath to get it all sorted.

Just need to start looking at possibly going clipless what shoe/pedal combo would you recommend (probably budget £200 for shoes, cleats and pedals)

Boardmans are very good bikes from what I've heard. And I'd definatly recommend going clipless, and 200 is easily enough for shoes and pedals (usually come with cleats), sure somebody has some good products to name in that price range (I use cheapish shoes/pedals)

Make sure the bike is set up properly though, maybe take it to a LBS.

well they do nice shimano spd -sl pedals (i think they come with the cleats if not theyre about 15 per pack) starting at about £50 up to the dura ace version at £199.

Their shoes dont look the greatest and if all they have is whats on the website then i would go elsewhere. I know that they use this company www.lesuirleakesbikes.com to source gear they dont stock and you can deal with them direct. They have a good website and stores all over the north west.

As to which actual shoes i think thats probably a matter of personal taste. asuming you spend £70 ish on pedals £130 will buy you some pretty fancy shoes with carbon soles (much stiffer than resin soles and in the cycling shoe world stiffness is good).

I have just got a Boardman Road Comp and it seems pretty good so far. I have just ordered some cheap M520's for £19 just to see how I get on as the toe clip pedals arrangement you get is a bit unpleasant for a novice!!

I have had to have the straps quite loose or I can't my bloody feet in but then that seems to defeat the object of having them as you can't pull up on them 'cause my feet just come out

Crikey £200 for shoes and pedals.......didn't know you could get them in snake skin!!!

I'm in the same boat, having only got my first road bike last week. I've just ordered some Shimano SPD SL, which come with cleats;

CRC are selling the M520's for £18.99 delivered and I have some cheap shoes from Lidl for about £16 I think although I'm sure you can now get them for £9. So £27 all in, cheaper than £200 !!
