But surely as it's a 1x there's half of it missing, so it should be half the price, right?

Bottom bracket might be interesting. Campagnolo fanboy as I am, I always thought UltraTorque was a bit of a weird design. I don't think I like the new shifter design but I get on just fine with UltraShift. But to be honest if the most interesting thing I can say is about the BB then it's probably not for me.

Expensive cassettes, but each is machined from a couple of blocks of steel so they will hopefully last several times longer than alloy ones?

Singlespeed is ok in the valleys and the easier slopes, but not on these offroad hills!

Tell you what... You could have my old heavily modded CAADX setup! (10-speed Tiagra, with a MTB rear mech, a 12-36 MTB cassette, and 46/34 chainset. Oh, and a TRP hy/rd front brake. )

Thirteen speeds and a wide range - better to suffer a little extra weight and fit a Rohloff hub.

Worth bearing in mind Herr Rohloff designed the hub because he was fed up with wearing and breaking traditional transmissions doing what we now call mountain biking.

Shand are one of the few makers who have grasped this point with their Stoater.
