Here for rides.
Has she had her jabs? Got some dodgy notes?

seriously; the handbook for the car will tell her what the running in regime will be.

I had to run-in a brand new Renault Kangoo in the mid 00's on the first day of my holiday. Made for a tedious drive to the French Alps I can tell you.

The car is new to your wife, she should take it easy and learn the feel of the car over a number of differing conditions before pushing it to its limits. I found out a lot of quirks to my car over the first few weeks of ownership.

I found out a lot of quirks to my missus, over the first few years of ownership.

Best to break them in gently before indulging in a good caning all round.
But an occasional red-lining won't hurt either.
We are still talking about cars, aren't we?

I've had a new car every year since 2002, all different makes and models and not one dealer has mentioned "running in" and I've never had any problems. I think new cars is the way forward, well done on your new purchase.

The worst thing (about the only bad thing!) to do with a new engine is to run it at constant revs for any length of time. Vary the engine speed and load as much as possible.

My last new car didnt even need the first 500 mile oil change and check,so the salesman told me, only needs to come in for the 10,000 mile service. tsk modern technology eh.

i can always remember when i worked as car mechanic , when we road tested a car after its pdi they use to get well and truly put through there paces and beyond at times !

mazda 2 very nice never owned a mazda

Not running an engine above 2.5K revs before it has warmed up is good advice for cars of any age, however someone once told me that diesels benefit from a little bit of high revving on start up, anyone know anything about this?

So pubrunner, after reading this thread, it would appear that your wife can do whatever she likes....
Generally, yes, just have an ounce of mechanical sympathy, don't rag it (or any engine) from cold, don't labour it at low revs and don't sit at constant engine speed for any length of time until you've done over 1k miles.

RPM limits are misunderstood and much damage can be caused by driving everywhere at 1,000 rpm, to an engine of any age.
