be sure that you're going cycle route and pavements because you want to and not because you're unsure, you'll always be quicker and more comfotable riding on the roads and then you'll be wanting a different sort of bike
Get a hybrid, it will do everything you want and will take a good bit of punishment and you should get a good one for about £200, beware of gumtree though lots of stolen bikes and dodgy characters on there.
