I'm looking at buying a carrera subway 2 for work and general riding. I have around £300 to spend and have also looked at trek 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3.

Which would you think is the best one to go for?

I personally like the subway however any advice would be appreciated.

I've heard good things about the Trek 7.2, but I haven't ridden it, nor have I seen it up close... and I am far from an expert.

Can certainly recommend the Trek 7.3, got one myself and it handles my commute really well. For £350 the components are pretty good, its quick and responsive and with about 900 miles under my belt the tyres haven't had a sniff of a p*****re. Plus you can attach full guards and a rack too.

Bought a Subway 1 for the ship I work on. it's a nice ride and I'm happy with it.
BUT -- it's fitted with 2 chainrings and a triple shifter. Think someone else also had this fault. Unforunately picked it up just before ship went to Norway for the rest of this year so didn't get chance to shout at Halfruds and get it sorted.
Having said that the gearchange is ok and it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference - just check before you hand over the cash.
I find the suspension seatpost does rock a little, I would add that my 16 stone is probably more than it was ever intended to carry though.

As far as im aware no one makes indexed double shifteres, they are all triples, go and look at any £3000 freeride machine that has 2 rings and a bashplate... you use the limits on the mech to limit how far the shifter will shift.

This was not a fault. The Subway 1 comes as standard with a double, then the back is a megarange cassette (ie normal cassette with a huge jump to the largest cog.) This arrangement works fine, in that the smaller front ring is fine with 99% of hills, but the extra-large cog allows a get out of jail free card for the odd urban hill.

Personally I would go for the Subway 1 not the 2. I have been VERY pleased with mine. I love it as an allrounder and have upgraded all the drivetrain and the wheels over the past few years. Ideal for taking on family holidays as it will do road or offroad. To be honest it does 98% of what my Koga Miyata touring bike does and will do 50 mile road rides fine too. Takes mudguards and a rack.....

The Subway is a good bike. Don't worry too much about your choice though. They are all decent bikes. Just buy one and get rding.

I'm curious  Why do you need a bike onboard a ship?

It's a company vehicle . Errr..guess the ship counts as one too.

It's actually used for nipping up to the shops for the papers, a bit of personal shopping for the crew and that sort of thing. I guess a similar sort of use to that a canal boat owner would use a bike for.

I've got it on a turbo trainer in the middle of the engine room at the moment, only way I can get any miles in as ship is spending a lot of the time at sea just at the moment.

How many tonnes is your ship please? If you hooked the turbo trainer up to the drive shaft (or whatever it's called) you could get a serious workout. And save some fuel.

With the cargo onboard now around 6,000 tonnes.

Can't see my meagre efforts making a noticable difference to the 12,000 litres of diesel thats been used in the last 24 hours though. And thats at an economical speed, could get it up to 20,000 at full speed.
