Hi
I have a 2013 Giant Defy 3 with an FSA Tempo 50/34 crank and Shimano Sora Front and rear derailleurs 27/12
Having ridden it for a few months im thinking of an upgrade because it feels very clunky and cheap and 'loose',its difficult to describe because as it does the job it doesnt inspire me with confidence
When switching from the large chainring on the front to the smaller the chain is thrown down with a clunk and getting back up seems quite hard
I have an FSA Gossamer 50/39 on my other bike with Tiagra Derailleurs and 25/12 and the the gear action is much smoother and feels alot more solid and i feel alot more confident

Could anyone recommend an upgrade which would improve the feel of the whole drivetrain,i am on a budget but desperate to change it

Compacts always tend to be a bit clunky as it is a big step down from the big ring - and can be a bit prone to throwing chain off if not set up properly. This is why your other bike with the bigger 39 feels better! I'd use your existing kit til it wears out and then think of upgrading. 105 is a good option without being too expensive.

Hi,

I've got to agree. The shifting on my Giant TCX 3 with basic Shimano 2300 gears & cheap FSA cranks is so much smoother than on my Giant Defy with full Shimano 105 groupset. I don't know why and can't understand it myself??

I also seem to get a lot more chain rub & noise from the chain/cassette/front derailleur with the 105 and am guessing that this may be down to the fact that there are 10 gears as opposed to 8.

I'm thinking of taking mine into the LBS to check if they can set it up a little better than I have been able to. If I didn't have the TCX and know how smooth the gears could be I'd probably be happy with the Defy
