Normally a helpful bunch on here, they have helped me in the past. The reason I'm replying though is for the same reason as you, I'm looking for a dvd hdd recorder and have looked at hundreds of reviews. Nice to know if anyone on here has recommendations or otherwise. I have a Sony tv and would want to spend a max of £220, am happy with either 160 or 250Gb. Anyone got any opinions on the Sony RDR-HXD890 or 995?

I suspect you may have misunderstood what the OP is asking for which would appear to be £17 worth of dvd writer to put in a desktop PC.
For the dvd drive try ebuyer. Some folks will swear by a particular brand but since their sample size will be about 4 over a number of years I'd say see what gets the most buyer reviews and highest overall.
