there's another one which says 'the car that's happy to be behind cyclists', which begs the questions

- there's a lot of car ads that use bicycles. Why?
- there's a lot of car ads that are not about cars at all, at least not their supposed virtues. Why?
- cars aren't happy or unhappy. Their drivers might be, but that's different. Why the figure of speech?
- British Cycling is not a campaigning organisation, but, even so, what are they doing taking the money? It's a bit like the BHF taking money from a lard manufacturer, or ASH taking money from Gallaghers.

BEEP BEEP!! GET OUT MY F**KING WAY!!

Bikes are aspirational to car drivers?? is THAT why they want to kill us all??
Various thoughts...

Many drivers aspire to be as unpolluting as cyclists.

Roads are choked with motors. Cars are sold on dreams of freedom. Only real freedom on roads thise days is by bike. Car drivers aspire to be free qed car drivers aspire to own bikes.

there's a lot of car ads that use bicycles. Why?

Because as Adrian suggests, they're selling a lifestyle, a dream. Most consumer cars aren't actually all that interesting - in fact, they're pretty much homogeneous to boot. So manufacturers sell them as providing freedom, fun, youth, or any number of things which cars can't actually offer.

Even Top Gear knows this. How much of the show is about the car, and how much is about some over-edited action/pop film, contrived humour, genuine gadabout entertainment, and occasional celebrity fawning?

Cycling is a bit of an extension to that - I think a lot of people like the idea of cycling, but don't want to do it because cycling is dangerous because of all those cars. But hey, if they can buy a car which makes those who do cycle feel safer, all the better... as long as it doesn't actually involve getting on a bike.

There are some excellent car ads though.

My impression of British Cycling is that it's all about sport, and sport will take money from anyone!

well, that's not entirely fair. I mean, do you see interweb gambling sites advertised on football shirts? You do? Oh - as you were!

Most car adverts are about a dream. One where owning and driving a car is fun, there are clear roads and pretty scenery, etc. If you concentrated on the car itself that dream would all soon fall apart and you'd be back to the reality of crawling along the Purley way and hoping that there will be a parking space in Comet's car park. Using bicycles in car adverts fits in with that because bikes are an aspirational item to drivers symbolising the freedom they are missing.

Quite agree.

For me, most car ads put me off a car, for the simple fact that they had to advertise the thing to sell it to me in the first place.

Do you think Fiat realise that many cyclists would feel they had more in common with the driver of their Punto than with a lycra clad cyclist on a bike without mudguards?
