Got to realising today that my current Giro skid-top is coming nine years old. Suggested replacement age is 3 apparently, which in think is daft and OTT. Looks perfectly fine but could be degraded by age at this stage despite being stored in its original box. However, my bonce is worth more so I ordered new today. What does anyone else do for these types of time related replacements?
How to dispose of the old one?

1. Drop it from waist height onto the pavement.

2. Watch it crack open

3. Post picture on FaceBook, YouTube , DailyMail about how this dried out husk of plastic SAVED YOUR LIFE!!!!?!,!?!?!?!

4. Profit.

A mere 9 years? Mine is 18 yrs old, so theoretically I should have changed it in 2003 and be on my sixth helmet by now? I shall post a b&w photo of it in due course.

I can better that. I'm still on my original skull after almost 50 years!
Can beat that. Origional skull, 50 plus years.

True there's one or two cracks in it at present, but they'll heal themselves.

I gave one away, ended up as the base of an Easter Bonnet. Easier than using only card I was told after.

Actually, you have a newer, thinner model:

The skeleton is constantly replacing itself, explains Dr Peter Selby, an osteoporosis expert based at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

It takes around ten years to do this completely.

Old bone is broken down by cells called osteoclasts and replaced by bone-building cells known as osteoblasts.

At any one time we have a mixture of old and new bone as the turnover rates differ throughout the body.

But when we hit middle age this renewal process slows down, so our bones tend to get thinner, which is why osteoporosis sets in.
