Took the skin off a door in my old house and found a note wrapped around an old penny dated 1968. It gave details of how to find some hidden money in the chimney and was signed by two blokes who must have been the builders/carpenters.
None there, of course!

A friend of mine with a somewhat varied CV did part of the national roll out and retune for Channel 5.
He obviously needed to check both TVs and videos worked properly. There were a number of occasions when he'd reach for a video to check and hear a cry of "NOOOOO NOT THAT ONE"
Off topic, but many years ago a friend who taught horse riding to a couple of high school girls loaned them a TV programme about horse riding she'd recorded on VHS. She recorded it on the end of a film and made sure the tape was at the correct point for inserting and pressing play. This friend can be a bit dim and naive, and thought it was OK recording it on the end of a porno film, since she'd ensured the tape was loaned at the correct start point... the girls instinctively rewound it and pressed play!

I am sad that the time honoured tradition of placing unwanted gentlemen's literature in tree hollows in the local park for future generations is becoming lost.

grumbleweed !

and if any of the DVDs have K9 written on it , it is NOT going to be peter davidsons doctor who !

One flat I bought a few years ago had a couple of boxs full of photo's left in the coal shed. Part of me wishes I'd had a quick look through them before taking them down the tip.

When we moved into our little cottage which is appx. 120 years old, we were puzzled by the white framework that can be seen protruding from the wall. This was mirrored in the other corner of the same wall.
I eventually was brave enough to attack it to see what it was. At some stage, the alcoves on either side of the chimney breast had fitted wardrobes built into them and for some strange reason somebody had plaster boarded over them - just leaving the mouldings showing.
The wardrobes were approximately 2 feet deep and 5 feet wide, so this was a considerable amount of space that had just been boarded over. The wardrobe doors had been removed and the remaining structures were in pretty poor condition so we removed them completely and opened up the space.
I must admit that when I had my crowbar in hand to lever the plasterboard off I was anxious that I might find some hidden structural problem or something even worse!

Odd what some people do isnt it. A lot of this type of thing happened in the 1970's as there was no money around to do repairs so the cheapest option was taken.
I forgot to add my own find. When i moved into my house the was an old saw wedged behind a down pipe outside. I thought nothing about it for years but one day i cleaned it up and its now the most used handsaw in my joinery workshop. I even sharpen and reset it

Is there a gorgeous original ceiling under that one as well?

Was there any point in Artex apart from covering up nasties? Was it a decorative look that people actually wanted. I'm not knocking it if they do/did, just genuinely curious.
Horrid bloody stuff - but at least the only people that had to see it were inside the house. Far worse was the crappy fashion of stone cladding. Lovely Victoria red brick houses coated in pretend stone! How it was not illegal (preferably punishable by public flogging!) I will never know.
