New job, may need sat nav.

Hiya all,

I have never been good with directions and being able to get lost at the drop of a hat. Working on my own in future will prove to very amusing.

I have lots of sights to visit throughout York, so my need to get one of those magic direction thingamajigs to tell me where to go.

Anyone got any experience with them, don't want to spend too much money on one, so whats value for money?

Going to miss my cycle commuting because my van will now be my office.

Why not get one of they Garmin thingymabobs, then you could use it on your bike too, if you can convince the HR dept of your new job you need a Sat Nav Device, then they may even buy it for you...Bingo!

Going to miss my cycle commuting because my van will now be my office.

You could get each place to buy and train a homing pigeon and then you could follow it/take it in the van when you need to go there.

Of course, I haven't thought out how you'd get the pigeon to your place first - but Archer will be along in a minite and is sure to have a solution.

Its a little Suzuki flat bed van thing. A trained pigeon, good idea but don't think it would work. somehow.

Gromit, I dunno how many sites you'll have to visit, but I guess you'll get to know them pretty quickly - just like the recycling round. Could you explore them on a bike first in the evenings, to work out the route? Although a satnav would be fun to have, to play with anyway. Esp if it could also go on the bike/tandem....

Will you be keeping the van at home? Will Jolene sulk? (Jolene, BTW, is red, and Italian, but really quite well behaved)

to answer the original question, my favored sat nav, out of the five i used during my job last summer was the TomTom one. small screen, tucks out the way, easy to use, just tap the screen

normally i'm the kind of person who just has town names on a bit of paper and that does me fine, but driving in london for work would have been a nightmare.

The recycling round was easy compared to this, I have over 40 sites to take care of and have only one day to find out where they are.

Next week I'm thrown in at the deep end so to speak. I would love to be able to cycle to them, however each place can be miles from the next, for example Whitby to spend 2 hours working getting back to do three more sites in York before the end of the day.

Having a sat nav would make things a lot more easier than carrying hundreds of bits of paper around with me.

Whole of North Yorkshire is obviously very different. Tomtoms are a lot more, what I like about them are the software's sound cues are really well timed in my opinion, quite a bit better than the sat nav I have.

The problem with navigating York are there are only 6 bridges in York to cross the Ouse by car (infact 6 sandwiched between one half way to boroughbridge and another in Cawood. It's the same navigating much of North Yorkshire, there are a dearth of bridges. Once you know where all the bridges are, it's not too bad.

Geezer today in a "Pre Booked" cab had a Tom Tom and while I have never had a car I was impressed with how good they were and how easy they were to use.We found out way to Woking in time even though he took a wrong turning and went down the M4/A4.

Actually I wouldn't mind one for the bike but have I really got use for it?
