Six years out of a laptop is pretty good. I generally get three, tops

I was the same.

Five years and counting for my MacBook which is used every day, not least to have a play on here.

It was £1,000 in 2009 when a roughly equivalent Windows laptop was about £600.

So the Mac is proving to be better, or at least fair, value.

I also prefer the working environment, but would be quite happy with a fast Windows laptop.

My work one is a 'business class' Dell - quite a nice machine, although I believe it is about £750 to buy retail which is almost Mac money.

I have always had Mac laptops because of the reliability and durability. I am a magazine writer and travel a great deal often to very out of the way places so my laptop gets some pretty hard use. I use it for my photography as well - Macs are superb for photo editing, pretty much standard amongst pros. Again, much hard use. I am not complaining about the typically three year life. By then technology has moved on and, especially with photo editing, that can make an upgrade very worthwhile.

Honestly don't know? Is there some rough way of explaining the difference?

Also, could it (the processor) be updated if I wanted to?

Looks as good as any, and the 'no bloatware' promise is a good benefit.

A solid state drive would be faster, but I think one of those would be £400+ and may not have the capacity you need, depending on how much stuff you store.

If you want to browse yet more, I can recommend Saveonlaptops - UK based and you can ring them on an ordinary Birmingham number.

Thanks. Isn't the one I posted a solid state laptop?

Which bit of the phrase "my budget is about £400" didn't you understand?

No, it has a 500gb SATA hard drive which is a conventional HD. Typically SSDs are much lower in capacity and much more expensive. Unless you want a really fast laptop I wouldn't bother, plus your budget wouldn't stand it.

Hey hotshot, I wasn't talking to you. I was responding to a comment immediately above mine who had referred to the longevity of his Mac as opposed to other laptops he'd had. Believe it or not the entire conversation in the thread is not and was not all about you. I couldn't care less what your budget is, or why you need a laptop. Get over yourself.

I think if you look back you'll find this thread isn't about me at all, but thanks for recognising my footballing prowess anyway
