Apparently Bristol is to try out some non-slip manhole covers...

Work is under way this week to install 16 Griptop covers to replace traditional iron covers, which can be slippery in wet weather and lead to accidents.

Bristol City Council became the first authority in the country to use the non-slip covers, which are topped with aggregate to offer more grip for motorcyclists and cyclists, when they were introduced on the new roads created as part of the Cabot Circus shopping centre development.

I think I saw them as I was unlocking my bike at the office ... certainly spotted some kind of green covered square manhole cover being loaded onto the back of a truck. But wasn't paying them that much attention.

Now they need to come up with some non-slippy road paint!

This is really good news for motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders.

I remember when testing was taking place and they found the new anti-skid surface really worked. I'm glad it's being introduced in Bristol - hopefully it will be rolled out nationwide.

I hit quite a nasty sort of manhole thingy (in Patong) just like the drain that buckled my back wheel in Pert,Scotland in 1986.

I've dropped my iron horse on paint in the rain. At a busy four-way stop near Fourways in JHB in front of lots of traffic. Oops, my own fault!

Worst place is mini roundabouts when you are turning right... often the area of the roundabout is quite small forcing you to cross the white paint whilst turning.
