Just to say hello to everyone here, I have decided to take up cycling again after more years than I like to remember!
My Partner has recently bought herself a bike to help to keep fit, and I have got hold of an old bike to restore and join her for a little gentle riding! We live in rural Northern Ireland, so do not get the volume of traffic the rest of the UK has to endure, most of our roads here are only heavily used by tractors and the odd herd of cattle!

I have still to clean a few years of dirt off my bike to determine how much restoration it will need, but it seems basically all there and sound, but I may be appealling for some help here should I need it!
I will perhaps put up progress reports and photos as I strip and rebuild this machine.

Regards to all

Wilf

As to the make of my bike, I've not yet collected it from the neighbour's shed where it has been lying for years, only roughly examined it, so I don't yet know the maker, I'll post the info when I get it into my own garage!

Hi and welcome Wilf, now just being nosey but what make is this "old" bike lol.

I've now discovered that the bike is a "Shimano Explorer", I'm not up on modern bike descriptions but I think it's what's called a "Hybrid" I intend to alter it slightly to use on the road (Change the handlebars, tyres etc) it seems that it dates from the 1980s.
There is also another bike in the same shed, a "Silver Fox Panther" (or possibly "Panther Silver Fox"!), same type of bike, which I can get for spares, so I'll probably get both of them, then decide which is best for restoration.

Regards

Wilf

I intend to post progress as it happens, but at the moment I'm told that I can't yet post pictures, so not much point in starting to put anything up until I can, I'll be keeping a photo record against the time I can post them, might be of interest to someone.

Just thought I'd change my avatar to something a little more appropriate, my first "Real" bike at age 13 was a Phillips tourer which weighed a ton (the "All Steel Cycle"!), but served me well for many years and hundreds of miles!
