New mobile phones....

I've got a lovely new mobile phone, my HTC Desire HD. Love it. But I noticed recently just a couple of little marks appeared on the case. Eek!

So off I went and got myself a gel type cover and a screen protector. Sorted.

Hey! Wait a minute, my phone now no longer actually looks like the phone I bought. Yes it does all the same things, but I liked the look of the phone better without the cover......but if I take it off!

So what is this madness! You buy a phone you like the look of (oh and because of the features too!) then you spend more cash changing the look of the phone to 'protect it', thereby changing the look of the phone.

So, why can't mobile manufactures actually make their phones in such a way that they are more scratch resistant in the first place? (yes I can understand that there will always be a place for invisible screen protectors)

Is it just me or is this just another money making scheme!?

Madness!

You'll no doubt replace it in a year/18 months, by which time it'll be old hat and you'll hate it.

Stop worrying about it, it's a bloody phone!

Just use the case. I've managed with my HTC Magic in a case for 18 months so another 6 before I change contracts !!!!

Oh and the Magic, has finally got Android 2.2.1 whoop ! The only problem is, everything's changed...... going to have to re-learn the phone

Never, ever, ever take it out of the box it came in when you bought it.

That way, when you come to sell it, it will be in perfect condition, and you can buy another one to store away.

For gods sake man, it's a phone, not a piece of jewelery. Stick it in yer pocket and use it - if it gets battle scarred, scratched and dented it will just prove it's been owned by a man, not some soft shandy swilling southern jessy with soft hands and a penchant for "moisturiser".

Guys, I should point out that I am not particularly concerned about it. I did buy a cover, but I still leave it in my bag to rattle around whilst I'm cycling, drop it every once a while etc.

I just find the fact that it seems normal to buy something that to keep it looking reasonable (and by that I don't mean perfect!) you need to spend more money. Surely manufacturers can make good funky looking phones that are made from tougher and more scratch resistant materials!

...and as for moisturiser! Whats wrong with that? I moisturise every day!

[In response to Mag's post above the last one, which he snuck in while I was typing]

They could, but just think of the extra revenue they get for replacing them. There is a chap at work thet has had at least 3 iPhone 4's in the last year as he has a habit of dropping them when getting out of his car. Some apps just don't look right when veiwed through a smashed piece of glass.

Actually, I agree with the OP, though I have never bought a protective case. I'm only really careful of the screen.... to many scratches, and everything looks pants. My phone went for a swim in the bath recently... but thankfully works OK now

When I'm cycling, it goes in the rear jersey pocket.
