I've been putting in a little extra effort over the last two weeks, trying to make the amount of times I commute each week a little more consistent.

Things are really paying off, with my general fitness increasing (I can play squash much longer and can get up some of the hills that I literally used to dread).

In addition, I seem to have developed a whole new muscle set!!!

I'm no physiologist so excuse the layman's terms but, the best way to describe it is, if I put my hands in my pockets I can feel new (but quite short) pair of muscles just below my hips and above my thighs…they're mah-hooosive and really flip about as I walk!!

Cant stop walking about the office with my hands in my pockets...people are getting worried!

I think they are lower down, done a little googleing and have come up with the ILLIOPSOAS! (they seem to be in the right kind of location and I can flex them without moving my thighs or quadriceps)

Never even knew I had them.

Well don't spend too long fiddling in your pockets trying to identify these muscles, you might get arrested....!

Now roll your trousers up. Yes, in the middle of the office. They already think that you are a bit strange, so nothing more to loose there.

Set your knee at 90°, and then tense your leg. You will see a muscle just to the right of your kneecap. This is your VMO. That will also develop nicely as you cycle more.

When I was unfit for a period of about 2-3 years in my non-cycling sabbatical (best way of describing it) my legs got a little chubby and would chafe (sp?)when I walk...

..got back into it in a big way and I now have legs like Thor.. which now rub when I walk. You just cant win

This strange muscle of which you speak. Is to the right of your kneecap on both the legs yes?;)

Yes!! It is to the right of your left kneecap when viewed by yourself, and to the right of your right kneecap, as the person opposite sees you!!
