Hiya all, my first early potatoes have started to flower, how long should I leave them before tipping them out of the container and eating them?

How much does it cost to Oldham?
Give 'em a couple of weeks at least yet- if you can resist boiling some and covering them with butter and parsley...........

Don't tip em out!

As Dan says give them another couple of weeks ideally - but if you have them in a container then gently have a grope in the earth around the side of the container and pick out suitably sized spuds leaving the remainder to carry on growing.

Last year my Dad told me it was traditionally 12th of July to dig up potatoes but I think mine will be ready before then... but then the local garden centre (one with everything crammed into a very small space!), told us to plant them in tubs in the greenhouse to get them off to an early start.

I'm already eating my 1st earlies (rocket variety). They're definitely ready!

Thanks for this thread Grommit - been thinking the same with mine.

That's OK, I'm going to leave them for a few weeks, even though the ones near the door are taking over the yard.

I'm not sure what varieties we've got. Got some in the potato sacks and some in the ground. Both seem to be doing very well. Will have to find out later. Can't wait to try them!

Best with fresh mint and onions soaked in sugared vinegar -mmmmmmm

Caution though - a huge eelworm emerged from one of our spuds - I could have tied my shoes up with it - and they only leave a small entrance hole so always cut the spud in half.

It's ok, just mash em if you're worried.

I'm regretting not planting any spuds this year.
