hi all, i retired 12 months ago & put on a few pound's since then, i thought cycling would be a good start, just ordered myself a new boardman 8.6 MTX hybrid, need to start somewhere, i haven't really cycled that much for year's, will find it hard work to start with. looking forward to collecting the bike on friday, i've added mud guards, water bottle & holder & a small pump, i will look at the cycling helmet's when i collect it.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Look at getting a track pump, mini pumps are ok for roadside emergencies but generally you struggle to get tyres up to a decent pressure .

Welcome and good luck with the cycling!

If you have a foot pump for your car you'll probably find it good enough to pump up the tyres on the bike as well - and a fair bit easier than with a hand pump although you may need an adapter (they're a couple of quid from halfords).

Great work and welcome to the forum

Do keep in mind that weight loss is best managed through diet rather than exercise; although of course any excuse to get out on the bike should be seized and it should have a secondary effect of providing some of the reward that you might be seeking by over-eating...

Welcome aboard and best of luck. I hope you enjoy your new bike.

FWIW, I've lost at least two stone since I started riding regularly again, with no changes to diet. It's taken 18 months and I've built myself up to riding almost every day.

So it is possible to lose weight with regular excercise. And it certainly does not hinder weight loss. It just takes quite a lot of exercise to have a real affect.
