Hi all. I'm in Somerset and collected my first road bike at the weekend having done quite a lot of cycling on my husband's bike through the summer. It was all good until I did the Great Weston Ride on it and realised about 20 miles in that it was basically too big for me (was having to over-reach) so am delighted to now have my own bike.

I like to run but haven't been able to do that for about 16 months due to foot injury so am hoping to be able to get out on my bike as much as poss over the winter. I've already posted in the General section for some advice about cycling through the winter and am really looking forward to being part of a cycling-specific forum. Am encouraged about some of the other nice things people have said about the site!

Hi Lola and welcome to the site from just over the border in Dorset.

What bike have you bought? I cycled around most of the Somerset Cycle Route over a weekend a couple of weeks ago, camping overnight at a small site near Langport. Some great cycling around Somerset especially around the Somerset levels.

Hi Lola and :welcome:
Cycling through the winter months can be very enjoyable as long as you are well equipped for the weather and aware of road conditions.
Have fun on your new bike!

Thanks all for your welcome. Bikerta - I got a Giant Avail 3 (will probably make it my profile pic when I've worked out how!), was really keen to get a women's road bike and try and get good fit after using my husband's which really wasn't great for my back. Cycling on the levels is great, I did a bit of that in the summer. Its a lot more hilly where I am though, husband's bike was really poorly geared for hills (the only way to get up a hill was to just go for it!) although great on the flat. The gearing on my new bike should hopefully be a bit more forgiving.
