2300 should take a 28
It does just, but when I checked it, it is meant to be max 26. The B limit screw is maxed out and it is a touch noiser than it used to be...
but same with the FD as well (also a 2300 on my bike) - that is meant to be max 50 and I am running 52. problems start if I look a compacts.... then I need to go to 32 to get the same gear ratio and that is well beyond the 2300

Ah Ok. If other things need replacing I guess the economics for the Triban3 don't add up and there's probably not many things you'd want to move to a donor frame.
wheels (Fulcrum Racing 7CX's with brand new tyres). shorter stem if I stay with a man's bike, and the narrower bars plus the cross levers which are essential for me being slightly paralysed. Pedals also plus lights attachments, bottle cages, saddle bag & saddle (speech phenon expert), rack etc but otherwise no....

Are you planning on this bike being an upgrade, essentially?
I was hoping to get a little more time out of the next bike, so probably yes. This one was new in September 2012 but has seen a lot of use and been threw 2 winters. I knew it would not last particularly well but had hoped for slightly more than the 6,000 miles I got out of it in that time.

Right off out shopping... could only be window shopping but we shall see what is available and work out if a woman's 52 cm frame is better for me or stay with a man's 54cm frame at the very least!

Pity the PlanetX RT58 Alloy doesnt have rack mounts that would be a good spec for the money.
I've got another bike that takes rack mounts so I didn't mind, but I think if you were looking for something you can use in the winter the kinesis would be better.

OK - I over spent by £95. My OH says if I feel guilty about it I can use the money from my own account to make it up!

I have bought this - well currently left a deposit on it until tomorrow am.

I confess to knowing nothing about the manufacturer - feels like I should be buying a camera not a road bike.... but the geometry suited me really well on the women's 52cm model and I have managed to wrangle the £75 trade in for the Triban 3 and keep my existing wheelset (Fulcrum Racing 7 CX's)... in fact the guy in the shop was insistent that I kept my old wheels because they are better than the ones on the new bike. The gearing is a compact 50/34 but with a 12-32 cassette which is 10 speed, so gives me the same or exceptionally similar lowest gear. It has loads of clearance under the brake callipers so mudguards won't be an issue, and will take a rack (we even got one off the shelves in the shop to check we could get the pannier arm to the brake bosses around the rear calliper cable). Weight wise it comes in slightly lighter than my existing Triban 3, some of the Specialized bikes I tried out seemed awfully heavy. I looked at a variety of bikes including some Pinnacle's and one or two others, but in the end preferred this one for some strange reason. It just felt right sitting on it.

So problem of fitting mudguards has been dealt with... I :surrender:'ed. Possibly not the cheapest way to deal with it, but  n-1 in exchange for n+1 and some ££££ happens tomorrow.

thanks for everyone's help. I know it is not one of the models anyone suggested and I hadn't even looked at it previously either, but I will save £95 in bus fare alone inside 2 weeks if I had to use the busses or trains to get to my parents' home 3 times a week from where I live, so I can 'justify' it! (Honest)

Just tell me I haven't made a huge mistake please!

I have a Fuji hybrid, which I am very happy with. You definitely haven't made a mistake. I'm sure you will love your new steed
