The depressing headline in the Evening Standard reads "warns drivers when they need to watch out for cyclists". Well I'll give any drivers reading a clue and save them the money - you need to watch out for cyclists all the time.

The new Volvo technology is interesting. If that gets rolled out to all cars then that'd be a huge potential life saver. I fear some of the RLJ'ers amongst us could use it to their advantage though!

How about the drivers are actually observant themselves, like they should be, and don't rely on technology telling them what to do all the time!

Priority list when driving:

1. Watch out for pedestrians
2. Watch out for cyclists
3. Watch out for motorbikes
4. Watch out for anything else I might hit or might hit me.

999. Take notice of sat nav

The only exception is that 1 and 2 are not relevant on motorways.

How inept incompetent and downright stupid are road users when a manufacturer even thinks this sort of thing might be useful?

I agree with the criticisms. How much easier it will be to text while driving when your technology is taking care of hazard detection!

The technology that frightens me most in this respect is Google Glass. How will people pay attention to driving when they are busy watching videos shared with their mates on Facebook?

Couldn't have put it better myself. While sat nav does have it's uses (I sometimes use them in hire vans to find places in vast urban sprawls like London), it's yet another piece of push-a-button-something-happens-so-I-don't-need-to-make-any-effort tech which makes life easier, yes, but ultimately makes people lazy. How many people simply cannot do without it now, like mobiles?. I'm a geologist, I prefer to read maps, geological and OS, as it makes me better at reading them and understanding how to get from A-Z without resorting to tech all the time. It's not hard. I also have a trusty well-thumbed and dog-eared old A-Z of London^_^. So 95% of the time, I do without sat nav.

On a recent trip to the smoke, the sat nav said turn right (in a nice Irish accent) so I did only to be confronted by steel pillars restricting the width of the road. Luckily, I turned the wing mirrors in and squeezed through with a gnats whisker to spare. Blasted Sat Nav!!.

What worries me is that I have heard that the new sat navs can now tune in to live traffic cams to show you the jams. Isn't that watching TV in the car, which is illegal?. One of our staff once had someone crash into them due to the other driver faffing around with the sat nav.

I think it is a good idea. What can it hurt to have a reminder to people, especially lorry drivers, that they are approaching a dangerous (to cyclists) intersection. Sure it is not a cure-all or anything like that, and nobody claims it is. other initiatives will enhance safety to a far larger degree, no doubt, but among other things I take heart that dangers to cyclists are increasingly perceived by commercial entities to be real, and general, enough to warrant this sort of R&D.

And whether we like sat navs or not, the are here to stay - as are similarly distracting GPS devices on bikes I might add. Ultimately no one is going to look after a cyclist more thoughtfully than the cyclist him/herself
