New secondhand car

If you knew one end of a car from another, and you high on your list of criteria was ease and cheapness (relatively) of future repairs and parts, is there a make that you could recommend?
In the past I think Fords were held in that regard.

Buy Japanese for reliability, but not always cheapest to fix

Focus for me, although the new ones could be the same as all the other makes out there, over complecated to much to go wrong with all the emissions stuff they are putting on motors nowadays, you just got to be a bit lucky, it's a bit of a minefield today, i would still go for a ford though.

Toyota. Utterly reliable IME and their costs and charges are good. I've given up saying I'll take it to e.g. a tyre depot when they come up on the service sheet - the Toyota dealer turns out to be just as cheap. Which is more than you can say for e.g. Merc dealers IME.

I'm an expert and I say you want one whereby that noisy thingummy bit that makes it go, under the big lid at the front, should be reliable. That's my advice.

Anyway an old rake like you should be smoothing it around in something befitting your status.

buy jap or german ,do NOT buy anything french (citroen peugeot or renault )all the rest are much the same ,,fords are a lot betterr than they used to b ,,i drive a bmw 320 now and yes they are a bit dearer up front but they hold their value and are really nice to drive ,,i had a toyota and it was uber reliable ,,yep ,,jap or german

Buy whatever you want, their are good quality aftermarket parts available for just about anything nowadays, and most manufacturers have caught onto the fact and have addressed their prices as well. If you ask enough people you'll find someone that's had a problem with just about every manufacturer imaginable. I wouldn't mind betting there are some people who have even had issues with their Rolls Royce and Maybachs
