New Stem

Looking for a wee bit of advice on a new stem.

I have a 100mm stem on my Synapse but feel I might need a shorter one.
I was thinking of getting either an 80 or 90mm one but unsure.

Is there a way of determining the correct size?

Or if I went for the 90 and it still felt too long would there be any chance of returning it for the 80mm. I was looking at this one from Wiggle, Deda Zero 1 for £17

Would that not just lower the handle bars?

I was just looking at Cannondale's pics such as that below, where flipping would have raised it. YMMV.

If someone in CC wants to start a stem library like the saddle one I would certainly be happy to donate a couple, but unfortunately I don't have any 90mm ones to spare.

A 90mm 15 degree is being sold for the princely sum of £3 incl p&p (!) by CRC at present. But not sure if you need OS. It is for 25.4mm bars.

When i bought our mtbs the bike shop said if we were not happy with the stem lengh, they would change them to a size that suits, so a week later we were back and they swapped them for longer ones, they seemed to have all the sizes and never had a prob finding the right size, am pretty sure if you have a lbs it would be worth asking if you could try a differant size bfore you buy.

And the bars are 31.8 so the CRC one wont fit Although the Deda one is listed as 31.7mm, I doubt 0.1mm would matter?

Given the design of the clamp that fixes the bars to the stem, 0.1 mm is neither here nor there. It'll work fine.

That will only go lower/longer if you flip that. You probably need a more angled/shorter one. One with the widest range is actually On One's 3D which I have and quite like and not bad for £10. You could use this to help you figure out what might work.

Thanks for that. I ordered the Deda stem last night (no patience) If its no good I can add it to the stem library

What does "angle 84 degrees" mean in the description of that stem? I assumed, being called zero, it would be totally flat, but it looks like it might have a slight angle on it.

Your head tube is going to have an angle somewhere around 73 degrees to horizontal, so a 'flat' stem, i.e. zero degrees will stick up at (90-73) 17 degrees, and an 84 degree (or 6 degree 'rise' stem) will stick up by 17 +/- 6 degrees, depending on which way you've put it on; giving the stem an effective rise of 23 or 11 degrees. If you want a totally flat stem as you look at it from the side, you'll need something with a 17 deg 'rise'.
