Hello,

I am looking to purchase a new bike tomorrow. Not looking to get anything expensive. Have a budget of $500. I kind of know what I want but just want to see if what I want makes sense to me.

About 7 years ago I had a Marin Quake 5.0 Mountain bike which I absolutely loved. For me it was an expensive bike and did everything I needed at the time. The only difference now is the only Marin bikes I can find are in the 4 figure range and not for me.

Currently as I sit here and type this I'm about 290 lbs. Which is my biggest concern, I am scared to get a road bike or really, any bike without suspension. When I was riding the Marin Quake, I was about 240 lbs and in good shape.

What I will be using the bike for: commuting to work on bike trail which is about 9 miles each way. Also riding the bike trails here in town. Would like to drop some of that weight I was talking about earlier.

Am I right to be going after a mountain bike with my size being I don't want to break it within the first week, I guess I just assume that mountain bikes are sturdier and could support a bigger guy like me better.

A few of the bikes I've been looking at are:

Diamondback Response
Trek 4300

And a used 10+ old Trek 8600 that is in immaculant condition for $500. Which it seems like a nice bike but don't know if I want to spend that much on a used bike.

Any help would be appreciated, Ive been doing some research but there isn't much out there for bigger guys looking to get into riding. I'm not looking to get into races or triathlons or anything like that. Just looking for a daily rider/commuter than support me at (in the bike world) a cheap price.

Thanks for reading, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

imho any good branded bike with higher number of spokes in the wheels should manage your size , as long as you keep on top of it maintanace wise .

i use an older Marin Bear Valley that i have owned since early 90's , lets just say i would never sell it , its been a great bike and friend !
