I would just like to post to say what a wonderful experience commuting on a bike is.

I did my second run yesterday cycling from Aldgate in London alongside the A13 to home its a bout 15 miles 1 way. I take my bike on the train in the morning then a 3 mile ride to the office.

I would like to thank people on this site for the positive views they have on cycling as that is one of the reasons i started.

Wish i had started sooner!!!

That's familiar!
Welcome to the forum JT - most people come around to your way of thinking ...sometimes with a little perseverance. Comments like yours would really encourage all those new to cycling, particularly in the 'Beginners' section, where reassurance about bike, kit, style, position is all important to the novice cyclist.
Maybe we'll see you on a CycleChat ride soon - check out the 'Informal Rides' bit in Community for action...
Take care 'out there'

Welcome to the World of Cycling! The more the merrier, I think. Before you know where you are, you'll be cycling all the way to/from Hornchurch!!:smile:

Welcome, from a fellow newbie. I also cycle from Hornchurch but to Canary Wharf, (shorter commute!), and the enjoyable commutes far outweigh the less enjoyable.

Well done and welcome to cycling!

Dont forget to read the highway code's guidance on cyclists and get some lights and batteries for poor weather or incase you get caught late. You can join the "yellow army" and get a hiviz top for around £2 in some of the supermarkets too

 Good going! Bicycle commuting = freedom.

You might find some handy resources in the VeloWeb Commuting section. Also check out the lighting and tackle pages in the "Randonneuring" section. They are applicable to commuting, as well.

Safe cycling!

45+ ... but who's counting? I ride with chaps who've got ten years on me, who give me a run for my money!

Me too, only been doing it on and off for four years.
I have had to use my car for the last week and I've hated it:sad:

I'm a newbie to the forum, and have only rediscovered cycling again in the last 18 months. I have got to agree with you totally.

My decision to start cycling came from the sheer lunacy of driving around East London. I spent one lovely, sunny saturday afternoon creeping forward in a queue of cars travelling less than walking pace to the supermarket, to then have to park on a meter which overran and I got a parking ticket approximately 10 nanoseconds after the meter went to penalty.

Thus my conversion to pedal power began. I use my cycle for nearly every shop, and even if I have to make multiple trips to get all the shopping, I still do it quicker than by car. And I gave up smoking around the same time, so as well as saving time and stress, I reckon I must be fitter now (though still no less thinner..)

So I should really thank that over-zealous traffic warden for extending my life-expectancy, reducing my stress, and generally improving my quality of life. But I bet they get people saying that to them all the time...
