Never even heard of it til I went on the Westminster cycling demo on Wed, so I went to the monthly CM ride on Friday evening was great fun!! Even tough I was on my own the fact that you have several other cyclists ensures its a fun way to highlight the need for safer cycling, and a swipe at car culture! http://www.criticalmasslondon.org.uk/main.html

Meeting at 6 ish near the Festival Hall several people had a few beers to get them in mood, great way to start your weekend, we went around Fleet St, St Pauls , city I peeled off at around 8 20pm but will deffo be going to next one.

But does it really highlight the need for safer cycling or does it just alienate cycling more

The whole idea of Critical Mass meetings to me is nonesense.

How can it promote cycle safety where a huge gaggle of cyclists get together and "have a few beers to get them in the mood" and then block the road to all other legimate road users?

It does nothing for safety, only preaches to the converted and gets all other road users against us rather than for us.

Would it not be far more productive if these people got together and though of sensible ways to improve cycle safety and then lobbied their MP.

Banning Critical Mass Rallies would be a good start.

This is just my opinion, to which I am entitled.

IMHO CM is just the sort of activity which winds up other road users. It is later that they then decide to get their own back on some poor innocent lone cyclist who suffers a punishment pass because an angry motorist seeks some sort of stupid revenge.

Please see my comments http://www.cyclechat.net/posts/1740171/ about the way forward. I seriously take the view that CM is regressive.
