New to road cycling

Hi all, great forum, I look forward to getting as much info as I can here!
At the moment I have a mtb that I commute to work on, a Merida big7, which is great on muddy tracks but on a 5 mile ride to/from work is a hard workout! I've thought about a road bike 1/ to commute to work, and 2/ to join a turbo training group for fitness. I've seen 3 bikes I like, please excuse my fetish for black and yellow! Merida Ride 91, Scott Speedster 60 both of which I'd get through c2w scheme, and a carrera zelos which is on sale at halfords. Would you advise going for the more expensive bike for quality or is the carrera a decent starting bike? Sorry for such a long 1st post. Many thanks, Robbie.

I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the Carrera, seems fine for the price...... but nobody ever regretted buying quality. My brother asked the same question, he was looking at the Zelos too. He bought a Giant Defy 3 instead with no regrets.

Buy the best you can afford, just don't forget about any extra kit you may need too.

Thanks for replies so far guys, the zelos "looks" ok to me and being half price compared to the others is attractive! Is there much I would need to upgrade compared to the other two? Would also consider other black and yellow bikes! ( my fetish / OCD!)

They would all be fine but if you are talking about the Zelos inevitably people will draw comparisons with the Btwin Triban 3, which some on here say is better.

i had a zelos as my first bike and just recently upgraded, nothing wrong with the zelos but now ive got my new bike the differences are unreal if you can afford better buy better if your on a tight budget then the zelos is awesome

Hi, thanks for info. Trying to find your build thread L14M but can't seem to find it (newbie!) I can get the dearer bike through c2w scheme but thinking cos never done any road cycling before it may be an option to buy a starter bike 1st, and use it for turbo training during winter if roads aren't for me.
