new wheels does that mean new rubbers??

ive just purchased some harry Rowland handbuiltwheels entry level really. shimano 105 on mavic open pros with continental gator tyres. ive set the brakes up which are basic sora and im wondering should i actually change the rubbers on the brakes?? if so what to? cheers

get some aztec blocks an shoes complete to improve performance

and some sandpaper for the rims! new rims + new brake blocks = very squeaky brakes as i found out recently

Hang on a second! Open pros are ceramic coated specially for long life amongst other things, but will eat normal rubber pads. Imho the best pads for mavic ceramic rims are Kool Stop Ceramic (in greenish colour).

Excellent wheel/build choice btw, they are as light as pretty much anything that is sensible, and should last you a very very long time if not abused.

I had to click on this thread to find out what new rubbers were; was the OP using 2nd hand durex on their wheels

Ah they meant new pads. I wouldn't change the existing pads but keep an eye on them and replace/upgrade them when they wear out or if you are unhappy with their performance.

Edit: the afore mentioned Aztecs are good pads, the koolstops are better and I believe Swistop are the bee knees but I've never tried the latter.

well i wasnt beeing smarmy saying entry level. they were his third lowest choice pricewise but im pleased as punch with them if i did put aztec or koolstop blocks on them would these fit on the sora brakes?? is it worth upgrading them as well they seem fine to me. if i did upgrade to i dunno say tiagra or ultegra what benefits would i notice if any?? surely a brakes a brake???

Open Pro's come in two flavours - normal and ceramic. It's unlikely they will be ceramic.

I didn't mean you were being smarmy, nice choice of wheel.

Sora brakes should be fine, the blocks make more difference then the brakes IMO. The Sora blocks if anything like Ultegra blocks are pretty poor compared to say Koolstop Salmons. You should have metal block-holders or Cartridges into which the rubbers slide and a small allen-screw just helps them to stop vibrating out. If you have these, then you just need the rubbers to fit Shimano cartridges, otherwise you'll need to buy the metal cartridge as well.

I use the soft Salmon on the front and the slightly harder blacks on the rear. The soft Salmons grip harder and \I| find that with this set-up an even pull on both levers gives pretty even braking (more front/less rear - the rear brake does very little anyway) and good control. The Salmons are very good in the wet.
