Hi Everybody, I’ve been planning this for quite a while but finally have the finer details sorted.
This ride will depart Manchester city centre at 10am on New Year’s day and head out through Ashton and Mossley before we cross the Saddleworth Moors and drop towards Holmfirth. At the 23½ mile mark there will be a stop at Compo’s Café for lunch. I haven’t eaten here but it does have a good reputation for fish and chips and they are open from 12-o-clock
.
After eating we will set off to tackle the famed Holme Moss with about 2½ miles to get warmed up before we reach the foot of the climb. Once over the top
It’s a fast(ish) run into Glossop (36½ miles)where Costa Coffee have assured me they will be open so we can stop off for a warming coffee (and maybe a small cake or 2?
).
This just leaves the final 14 miles back to Manchester, passing through Mottram, Hyde, Denton and straight down the A57 into town.
Normal forum social ride rules apply. Pace will be leisurely and no one gets dropped or left behind. We all wait at the top of the hills to regroup and the expected av speed should be around 10-12mph allowing for the terrain. There is a fair bit of climbing so be warned!
THIS is the route and if you click on the ‘show altitude’ button at the bottom left you will see what I mean about climbing. Part of the route goes along a towpath type trail through Daisy Nook. I rode this recently after a few days bad weather just to check and the surface was still good and not particularly mucky so IMO is fine for my best road bike.
If we leave Compo’s by 1.00 and arr at Costa in Glossop at 2.30 I reckon we will not be back in Manchester until 4pm at the earliest so lights will be essential, especially if the weather isn’t great. It may also be quite cold, particularly if waiting at the top of hills so please do dress appropriately
I reckon this will be a great way to kick off the 2013 mileage if you can avoid over indulging the night before. It’s a 50 miler (plus whatever you do to get to/from the start/finish) and takes in one of the (in)famous climbs of cycling legend so come on, who fancies it? Form an orderly queue please……
