As I said above I have a sirrus sport which I use a LOT. It's perfect for commuting in central London as its a higher ride position and good for in abd our if various parks on my route, speed bumps etc

I do also have a road bike. I would only get a hybrid if it were to be used for commuting or if you will use it off road. If you want to use it on roads for fun rides I would only get a road bike as hybrid is a compromise and you'll struggle with longer distances.

Ridgebacks element is well under your budget and only comes in at 26lb/11.7kg (evans made a mistake) which is nowt for a hybrid and into road bike weight territory. It's cheap because it's a shimano pet project company and is the same quality as anything by specialized or Giant. Should be noted that specialized tack on at least £100 for the name.

edit: I have two ridgeback hybrids now, also a specialized sport mountain bike and am waiting on a touring road bike. Ridgebacks are perfect for trails in ok weather, mtb is great for trails in bad weather but none of them are good for long distance on the road.

15 miles would be the longest on the road journey I would do on the hybrids. It's not that you can't get up to speed it's just that getting hit in the face by lots of wind when you do gets very tiresome very quickly. - This is the main benefit of drop bars.
