Discs are useful if it's wet and mucky. But better hydraulic ones over mechanical. Never had any issues with v brakes on flatbar bikes but then I avoid the rain if I can!

I have another random question - how do I work out what size I need?? I'm sorry I'm so dumb!

How tall are you? The bike shop will be best placed to advise but often websites give a range

I should think a 17" in a mountain bike especially if your arms are long like your legs

Cripes thats long legs for 5 `8" , seems you like MTB style but unless your going to ride on trails/ off road a flat bar hybrid might be a better choice ?

Tbh I might be taller than 5'8"!! Lol. I know my inside leg from buying clothes. I am a bit odd. I've got really long legs and arms and a little body.

I will be using my bike to ride to work occasionally, with other days riding to my car shares house. I am however planning on using the local trails and forests at the weekends a lot
