Well for those of you who read this there's a follow up. Following the benevolence of Welling Cycles and in particular their spares box, I managed to cobble together all the bits I'd snapped, broke etc during my first bodged attempt at fitting mudguards. I am now pleased to report that I have a full front and rear mudguard fitted to my commuter bike!! That don't rub, rattle or make any other noises that would just p*** me off. Admittedly the left front stay is still cable tied to the fork as I haven't figured out a way to remove the bolt I snapped in the fork mounting point but hey ho.
As a secondary bit of really good news, those of you in the Welling and East Croydon areas (and all the bits in between) can probably now relax in the knowledge that you're in for the longest drought in history.
