Landslide

Rare Migrant
Saw the aftermath of an accident on my way home tonight, rider in the road being tended to by passers-by. I stopped to see if I could help, but the situation was pretty much under control. I hope the rider's OK, the ambulance was just turning up as I left the scene.
On the upside, whilst I was there, something happened that prompted me to fire off the following message:

Dear Stagecoach,

As a regular cyclist in Sheffield, I am continually impressed by the courtesy and consideration shown by your drivers to myself and other cyclists.

At times, the media often seems to give the impression that all road users are at war with each other, but the number of nods, smiles and waves I've shared with your drivers on the roads (often as we give way to each other) proves that this is not the case.

Your drivers invariably give me plenty of room on the roads when overtaking, and never appear to be impatient even when I'm struggling up one of Sheffield's numerous hills!

This evening, I saw another example of the considerate nature of your drivers: as I was on my way home along Ecclesall Road, I noticed there had been an accident involving a cyclist at the junction of Thompson Road. The cyclist was being tended to by a number of passers-by, but was lying in the road, blocking the town-centre-bound bus lane. As I stopped to see if I could offer any assistance, one of your buses arrived. The driver stopped, and put his hazard lights on, before checking to see if an ambulance had been called (there was one on the way), and then leaving his bus where it was in order to protect the injured cyclist from any passing traffic. I'm afraid I didn't think to take a note of the number of the bus before I left the scene, but please could you pass on my thanks to the driver.

At times, it is easier to complain about the bad things in life, whilst the good things go unmentioned, so to put that right I'd like to take this opportunity to say "Thanks!"

Please can you pass this message on to all your drivers.

Regards...

Nice letter. Hope the driver gets to read it!

Hmmm.
it can be quite hazardous round there, what with lots of side roads, a bus lane, with people parked in it, etc. I've been almost pulled out on there and nearly knocked peds over there aswell before, (admittedly absolutely tanking it, what with the adrenalin from the descent from banner cross, but still...)

It is believed to statistically be numerically the worst road in Sheffield for Cycling injuries.

just numerically the worst, or statistically numerically? ;)

Well, it could be numerically the worst, but not statistically significantly so (IE, not so many more that it couldn't just be chance or down to sampling)

(I've no idea if that's what Marinyork meant though...)

I saw that on my way up Ecclesall Rd last night. The ambulance was already there and a couple of bikes on the floor. Presume one of them was yours Landslide?

Also saw another one near Meadowhall retail park, corner of Attercliffe Common and Carbrook Street. Paramedic car already on scene with Ambulance just pulling up. Looks like they were giving CPR. I must say it didn't look good.

In the 2 years I've been commuting, to see 1 accident is very rare never mind 2 in a day.

I bet its down to training, Stagecoach are a big company, a lot of the operators are shoestring fly by nights who pay peanuts....

I keep getting skimmed by a Mayne's coach in Manchester, 50 mph and passes about a foot to my right.

In balance, here in southampton I find First to be quite good actually. Many, many good overtakes with plenty of space, and drivers occassionally letting you out of a junction, etc. Taxis and small firms can be a bit hit and miss, if you pardon the expression..
