Newspaper sales quite surprised me

National newspapers have completely different content to local ones, so the only valid comparison is between the Guardian and the Daily Mail.
In which case, I can only assume that DM readers are simply too thick to operate a computer.

So what you are really saying is that people like my pop who spent his whole working life as a cryptographer from the late 40's and worked on the very first computers whilst the likes of your old man was still doing sums with a pencil and fag packet...Who was then sent all over the world working for hm gov to defend the rights of the rest of people like you and your old man is actually thick because he reads the DM ? There are local papers and there are local papers...up here I find the Evening Chronicle a waste of space (except the newcastle united news) the Journal is too business orientated- yawnsville, the Shields Gazette mixed bag... but the one that stands head and shoulders above the others is the Northern Echo; a decent mix of local (albeit more durham area) and national news with some cracking articles.

The Northern Echo has always maintained high standards. It outsold all of the national dailies in the newsagent where I worked as a kid. It will be biased towards the Durham area as it is/was a Darlington based newspaper. It had sold its main offices in Darlington to Debenhams and is relocating.

Snail racer made the implication that my pop is stupid because he reads a particular newspaper on and that he is a fascist in a thread which I made reference to him on. I put him right. Oh, he was also a union rep who striked against Maggie back in the 80's when she removed his union rights.
Is it OK in your book to insult peoples parents in this manner ?....or should that be it seems OK in your book to do this.

It was in the days of paper page plans, which were like a blank grid.

There have been a few cases of unprofessional sub-editors putting offensive captions/headlines on grids, only for them to (accidentally or otherwise) appear in print.

Another example happened at the Portsmouth News.

Their Bognor FC reporter was a young man who carried a little extra weight.

On the plan where his match report was due to appear, a sub wrote: "Fat boy waffles on about Bognor."

It appeared as the headline.

Things are pretty desperate in local news at the mo'. Gone are the days when law was seen to be done in Mag's Court with a reporter from the local Rag casting their eye over proceedings. Gone are the days of a reporter sitting through hours of tedious council planning committee meetings waiting for the odd gem of interest to their readers. Look at Liverpool. Used to have a decent morning paper and a decent evening paper with separate news desks. now there's one desk for two papers and every other page is filled with PA copy.

Ok, there are bloggers nowadays, and twitter and all that. But how many are going to sit through these important and boring meetings?
